'Harry and Tonto' DVD - Request Library Series 1, Vol. 3 3,990 yen (tax included) amazon.co.jp
This classic road movie was directed by Paul Mazursky, one of America's representative filmmakers of the 1970s.
Along with his beloved cat Tonto, a 72 year-old New Yorker named Harry is forcibly evicted from his Manhattan apartment due to a governmental land readjustment. Though they initially go and live with Harry's oldest son, things don't go as planned. He then relies on his daughter Shirley to get him to Chicago. Along the way, they have a string of memorable encounters, including a meeting with a young hippie girl and a chance for Harry to reunite with his first love...
Traveling alongside the bigoted old Harry, who is played by popular TV and stage actor/comedian Art Carney, is the California-born male cat named Tonto, who was 4 years old at the time of filming. Though two cats were kept nearby as stand-ins, there was only one instance when was needed - when Tonto was too scared to walk the streets of New York. Viewers will be sucked into the movie by the realistic acting, which truly shows the reciprocal partnership that forms between people and cats. In other words, it's a must see film for any cat-lover.
